How LLMs work
Why AI visibility is volatile

Why models forget
Each major model version is retrained, not iterated. The reference base changes between generations: new sources are added, old ones are downweighted, cutoff dates move. A brand cited consistently by GPT-4 may be sparsely cited by GPT-5 simply because the underlying corpus and retrieval mix changed. There is no inter-version memory.
No index, no console
Unlike search engines, there is no public index of what a model knows and no native auditability - no AI equivalent of Search Console where you can check impressions and queries. Correlation coefficients and overlap figures published in studies are snapshots, not permanent truths (Source: industry/academic analysis, 2026). Optimising blind is the default state.
Non-determinism
The same prompt produces different answers across sessions, temperatures and model versions. Visibility is a probability distribution, not a fixed slot. Measuring it requires sampling many prompts many times - a single test tells you almost nothing. See how LLMs choose brandsfor why frequency, not position, is the metric.
What to do about it
Continuous monthly monitoring of share of voice, sentiment and citations across the LLMs your buyers use. A refreshed roadmap built on live data, not on last quarter's audit. The brands that hold their AI presence are the ones treating it as an operating system, not a project. See our monthly Run program and the cost of AI invisibility for the case. Frequently asked questions
If visibility is volatile, isn't GEO a waste - won't gains disappear?+
No. The underlying logic is stable: models cite trusted, authoritative, well-structured sources. What you build into your entity and authority compounds; only the surface signals shift, which is why monitoring keeps you ahead.
How often should we monitor AI visibility?+
Monthly at minimum. Models update without notice, so a one-off audit ages quickly. RocketGEO's Visibility Program tracks continuously and ships a fresh 30-day roadmap each month.
Can a single algorithm change wipe out our presence overnight?+
A retraining can shift it materially. Diversified, consistent authority across many trusted sources makes presence far more resilient to any single change.
